Ostracized by the Jewish community in Amsterddam to which he was born, Spinoza developed a political philosophy that set out to justify the secular state ruled by a liberal constitution, and a metaphysics that sought to reconcile human freedom with a belief in scientific explanation. Father of the Enlightenment and the last guardian of the medieval world, Spinoza made a brilliant attempt to reconcile the conflicting moral and intellectual demands of his epoch and to present a vision of man as simultaneously bound by necessity and eternally free. Here, Roger Scruton presents a clear and systematic analysis of Spinoza's thought and shows its relevance to today's intellectual preoccupations. His books include Kant in the Past Masters series, and Modern Philosophy.
. Roger Scruton is Professor of Philosophy and University Professor at Boston UniversityBut there are a few unexpected choices, like Alan Turing and Karl PopperAalthough on further consideration, they make more sense. Each volume has been prepared by an expert in the subject, and the result is a series of well-drawn and exceptionally useful pocket-size (4.5 x 7 inches) sketches of major figures in the history of Western thought. Popper's development of the concept of "historicism" in such works as The Open Society and Its Enemies and The Poverty of Historicism significantly influenced 20th-century political thought. However, Spinoza's thinking to justify pantheism meets with much, and according to me, justified criticism. Fashion can be and should be fun, and this lovely coffee table book demonstrates how this can be achieved. You can look forward to the publication of "In a Surreal Fashion: The Creative Collaboration between Schiaparelli and Dali" by Robyn Gibson in January 2003 (Berg Publishers). I found Roger Scruton's work here highly enjoyable and extremely instructive. A good read. I know I am!. A lucid and highly readable account of Spinoza. good way to start. A pleasurable and moving experience.. Some attention is given to the assessment of Spinoza by others like Betrand Russell and Goethe as well as his impact on philosophers like Hegel. It includes gorgeous photos and interesting text. This book explores the relationship between fashion and the surrealism art movement. Truly a beautiful work.. I also would recommend Scruton's introduction on Kant.. I was especially interested in the section of Dali's works and Schiaparelli's designs, showing how the two influenced one another. Scruton, in my opinion, gives a good introduction to Spinoza's philosophy
