This book reminded me somewhat of James Baldwin in an off-hand way in that the stories of average people are sometimes more compelling than those who usually find themselves in the history books. I suspect that the officials of the states agreeing to the settlements are guilty of shaking hands with the devil; the money is coming into their respective governmental coffers---and deep in their guts they hesitate to risk killing the goose laying the golden eggs. Highly recommend for both teachers & parents.. The plot as a whole, while certianly not bad, and containing some interesting myths and such, was nothing to get excited about, and sometimes I found the writing style a bit lacking.
